Nigeria and Netherlands forge customs pact to boost trade and combat smuggling

Nigeria and the Netherlands signed a customs cooperation agreement in Brussels, witnessed by Comptroller‑General Adewale Adeniyi and Director‑General Nanette van Schelven. The pact establishes a framework for intelligence sharing, joint training, risk‑management and capacity‑building to accelerate legitimate cargo clearance and secure international supply chains.

The partnership targets illicit cross‑border activities, including drug trafficking, counterfeit goods, wildlife trade and arms smuggling. Both customs services will exchange expertise, develop a joint work plan, and coordinate enforcement operations to strengthen border security while facilitating smoother trade between the two nations. The agreement builds on months of high‑level dialogue and visits by customs delegations in 2025‑2026 and underscores Nigeria’s role as a major West African economy and a key trading partner for the Netherlands.

The deal does not alter tariffs but provides an institutional basis for deeper operational cooperation, aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and the fight against organised crime in global supply chains.
