Nigeria and UNICEF review youth employment strategy through 2030
The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Youth Development and UNICEF have launched a nationwide initiative to review and update the Nigeria Youth Employment Action Plan (NIYEAP). The effort aims to develop a new framework extending toward 2030 that addresses persistent unemployment, underemployment, and the gap between education and market-relevant skills.
Regional consultative meetings have been held across the country, including sessions in Port Harcourt for the southern zones and Kano for the northern zones. These discussions involve government officials, stakeholders, and young people to assess previous interventions and identify necessary changes to meet the needs of a rapidly growing youth population.
The updated strategy focuses on preparing young Nigerians for a changing labor market influenced by digital technology, artificial intelligence, automation, and the green economy. Key sectors identified for potential self-employment and growth include the creative economy, technology and digital services, agriculture, agro-processing, and maritime activities.
