Nigeria and United States strengthen health partnership
Nigeria and the United States are entering a new phase of public health cooperation aimed at addressing major challenges such as AIDS, malaria, and polio eradication. While the partnership has historically relied on programs like the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative, there is an increasing focus on ensuring national sovereignty and domestic financing.
To manage the transition from external assistance to sustainable local funding, Nigeria has implemented the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and the Health Sector Renewal Compact. These frameworks, launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aim to align the Federal Government, state governments, and development partners under a unified reform agenda to reduce fragmentation and strengthen domestic institutions.
