Nigeria announces cash rewards for Youth Olympic athletes

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced financial incentives for athletes competing in the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. During a send-forth ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), detailed the reward structure.

Gold medalists will receive $3,000, silver medalists $2,500, and bronze medalists $2,000. Olopade emphasized that the Dakar games are historic as the first Olympic event hosted on African soil, describing the competition as a vital milestone for young athletes transitioning toward senior international stages, such as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Olopade also highlighted the government's commitment to grassroots sports development through initiatives like the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) programme, aimed at nurturing talent while balancing sporting ambitions with education.
