Nigeria approves ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public workers

The Nigerian Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public service workers across all levels. The intervention is scheduled to run for six months, beginning in November 2026, to mitigate the impact of rising living costs.

The decision follows a conciliation meeting in Abuja between government officials and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero. As part of the agreement, the government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, to be paid in three equal monthly instalments starting in November.

While the parties reached agreements on transport support, outstanding allowances, and health workers’ remuneration, they remained divided on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage. To address this, a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee will be constituted to commence discussions immediately.
