Nigeria approves decriminalisation of attempted suicide
The Nigerian Federal Executive Council has approved an amendment to the National Mental Health Act to decriminalise attempted suicide. This legislative change marks a transition from a punitive approach to one focused on medical care and support for individuals in mental health crises.
The Asido Foundation, which has advocated for this reform, welcomed the decision. Niyi Olowola, Chairman of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, stated that the move validates years of advocacy aimed at ensuring survivors receive treatment and dignity rather than prosecution. The foundation noted that the reform is the result of collaborative efforts involving mental health professionals, civil society organisations, and policymakers.
