Nigeria targets 30% health facility electrification by 2027, partners with Canada on power sector modernization

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) hosted a delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner David Sproule in Abuja, discussing a strategic partnership to modernise Nigeria’s electricity sector. The talks focused on capacity development, technology transfer, renewable‑energy integration, digital transformation and investment in critical power infrastructure.

At the same time, the Federal Government approved a financing and institutional framework for the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, aiming to provide reliable 24‑hour electricity to at least 30 % of health facilities by the end of 2027. The plan includes public‑private partnerships, an energy‑as‑a‑service delivery model, a facility‑energy‑management framework, eight private‑sector proposals and a dedicated Project Coordination Unit. The Rural Electrification Agency has already supplied power to five federal teaching hospitals, and the initiative is highlighted as a flagship programme of the Bola Tinubu administration.
