Nigeria approves modernization of four ports to diversify cargo traffic
The Nigerian government has approved the modernization and upgrade of four major ports located outside of Lagos: Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar. Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola announced the decision, stating that the initiative aims to create a more balanced and efficient national port system by reducing the heavy concentration of cargo traffic currently centered around Lagos.
While specific investment amounts and timelines have not been disclosed, the upgrades are intended to improve infrastructure and operational efficiency to attract international trade and support economic diversification. Historically, Onne has been the most active of these four ports, accounting for approximately 70% of their combined cargo volume in 2017.
Simultaneously, the maritime sector faces logistical challenges as abandoned and dilapidated shipping containers clog waterways and port access areas. Stakeholders report that tens of thousands of empty or broken containers are littering coastlines and residential zones, primarily due to the high costs of returning them to their countries of origin. This accumulation is reportedly limiting yard space, causing delays in cargo clearance, and increasing the overall cost of doing business within Nigeria’s port infrastructure.
