Nigeria Athletics Federation postpones 2026 Commonwealth Games trials to June 21‑23

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) moved the national trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games from June 20‑22 to June 21‑23 after severe weather in the United States caused flight cancellations that delayed several US‑based Nigerian athletes. An emergency board meeting chaired by AFN President Tonobok Okowa approved the one‑day shift, keeping the venue at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

The trials serve as the final selection event for Team Nigeria, which will compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. The AFN previously released a detailed three‑day timetable covering track and field events, including the women's 5,000 m, men's discus, sprint heats, hurdles, jumps, throws and race‑walking competitions. The revised schedule aims to ensure a fair opportunity for all eligible athletes to qualify despite the travel disruptions.
