Nigeria basketball enters new era amid coaching changes and women's team setbacks

Nigeria’s national basketball programs are undergoing significant transitions following recent performances. David Fizdale, the former NBA head coach, has revealed that he and his coaching staff are working with the men’s senior national team, the D’Tigers, on a pro bono basis. Fizdale aims to use his experience to build a sustainable system for talent identification, youth development, and infrastructure rather than focusing on short-term results or coaching salaries.

Meanwhile, the women’s national team, the D’Tigress, faces a period of reflection following their exit from the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin. After losing all three Group B matches, including a significant defeat to France, former captain and current Nigeria Basketball Federation board member Olumide Oyedeji described the campaign as a “wake-up call.” Oyedeji warned that Nigeria can no longer take its dominance in African women’s basketball for granted as other nations continue to close the gap.
