Nigeria basketball teams prepare for FIBA World Cup qualifiers and warm-ups

Nigeria’s national basketball teams are preparing for major international competitions. The men’s team, D’Tigers, is set to begin a decisive window for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers in Radès, Tunisia. Their schedule includes matches against Cameroon on August 27, South Sudan on August 28, and Cape Verde on August 30. The squad, coached by David Fizdale, features players such as Josh Okogie and Chimezie Metu.

Meanwhile, the women’s team, D’Tigress, recently faced Spain in a warm-up match for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The Nigerian side suffered an 83-58 defeat in Tenerife, struggling in the second half after a competitive start. This match follows a three-game exhibition series in China, where the team secured one victory. Head coach Rena Wakama is using these high-level encounters to refine the team ahead of the global tournament in Germany.
