Nigeria begins construction of new National Control Centre

The Nigerian Federal Government has commenced construction of an ultra-modern National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State. The new facility is designed for the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to replace a 64-year-old centre that no longer meets the technical requirements for managing the national electricity grid.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe led the groundbreaking ceremony. The project aims to strengthen grid reliability, improve monitoring, and enhance the security of the electricity system. Once operational, the centre will utilize integrated SCADA technology, large-format displays, and advanced analytics to help operators identify faults, plan preventive maintenance, and better manage generation and transmission capacity.

The initiative is part of the administration's efforts to address structural weaknesses in the power sector, including frequent grid collapses. The new infrastructure is expected to support the integration of renewable energy and improve Nigeria's coordination within the West African Power Pool.
