Nigeria begins local production of insecticide-treated mosquito nets

Nigeria has commenced local production of next-generation, dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated mosquito nets. The new facility, Health Textiles Nigeria FZE—wholly owned by Swiss company Vestergaard Sàrl—is the first in the country to manufacture this specific type of net.

The facility will produce PermaNet Dual, a product prequalified by the World Health Organization in 2023 to address increasing insecticide resistance. At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce approximately 10 million nets annually and create more than 600 jobs.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, stated that the development aligns with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) to strengthen domestic capacity and the healthcare value chain. The project follows a 2024 agreement between Vestergaard and the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC). Approximately 80 employees have already been recruited and are undergoing training in manufacturing excellence and regulatory compliance.
