Nigeria begins mass terrorism trials in Abuja
The Nigerian Federal Government has commenced a new phase of mass trials for suspected terrorists at the Federal High Court in Abuja. This initiative aims to address the backlog of insurgency and armed group cases to accelerate the judicial process.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence regarding the Ansaru terrorist group, including video footage showing the alleged beheading of a schoolteacher and church deacon, John Olaleye, following a May abduction in Oyo State. The court admitted the footage as Exhibit Oyo 1 and a list of terrorist demands as Exhibit Oyo 2.
Authorities revealed that two defendants, Mahmud Muhammad (also known as Abu Bara’a) and Abubakar Abbas (also known as Isah Adam), are wanted by the United States and the United Kingdom for alleged terrorist activities. The prosecution further alleged that the group sought the release of 30 members held in various Nigerian detention facilities as part of a prisoner exchange demand.
