Nigeria begins rollout of Audience Measurement System in Lagos
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched the first phase of its national Audience Measurement System (AMS) in Lagos. This initiative follows the June unveiling of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) and aims to provide credible data regarding television viewership, including what is being watched and when.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris stated that the system is intended to strengthen the broadcast industry by helping broadcasters improve programming, assisting advertisers in making informed decisions, and supporting content producers. The initiative is expected to boost investor confidence and create opportunities within Nigeria’s media and creative sectors.
Charles Ebuebu, Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), described reliable audience measurement data as the ‘new currency’ for the media industry. He emphasized that the success of the digital broadcasting transition depends on building robust data and commercial infrastructure alongside physical transmission systems.
First Media and Entertainment Integrated Ltd. (FMEIL), which is licensed by the NBC and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), is implementing the system. FMEIL has partnered with the Bulgarian technical firm GARB to ensure the system meets international standards.
