Nigeria boosts maritime cooperation with Ghana and domestic agencies

Nigeria’s maritime authorities have taken two steps to strengthen security and governance in the Gulf of Guinea. In Lagos, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Ghana Maritime Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding that creates a Joint Consultative Team, sets up regular bi‑annual meetings, and outlines cooperation on safety, piracy prevention, mutual recognition of certificates and joint enforcement. Director General of NIMASA Dr Dayo Mobereola said, “We will continue to work together to grow our economies and make the maritime sector safer.”

Separately, the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigerian Navy reaffirmed their alliance to combat smuggling, illicit drug trafficking and other maritime crime. Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha and Assistant Comptroller‑General Mohammed Babandede highlighted the use of technology and artificial intelligence to enhance port security and protect national interests. Both agreements aim to improve regulatory effectiveness and regional stability in West African waters.
