Nigeria calls for global governance and financial rule reforms at BRICS Summit

At the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for an urgent overhaul of global governance structures and international financial institutions. Represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu advocated for a system that is more representative, equitable, and responsive to modern economic and demographic realities.

The President specifically highlighted the need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council and the global financial architecture. He emphasized that BRICS serves to amplify the voice of the Global South and should drive a more inclusive international order.

Tinubu urged BRICS nations to move from dialogue to practical implementation and measurable development outcomes. Additionally, he positioned Nigeria as a strategic gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), inviting investors to explore opportunities in sectors such as fintech, telecommunications, and biotechnology.
