Nigeria CDS emphasizes human security in counter-terrorism efforts
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasized that military force alone is insufficient to defeat terrorism. Speaking at a training workshop in Abuja, Oluyede—represented by Rear Adm. Gideon Kachim—stressed the necessity of protecting civilians and building community trust to achieve long-term security.
The workshop, organized by the Department of Defence Civil-Military Relations, focuses on enhancing operational effectiveness through human security and civil-military cooperation. Oluyede noted that Nigeria faces a complex security landscape involving terrorism, violent extremism, banditry, and communal conflicts. He argued that security operations must prioritize human dignity, human rights, and the rule of law to maintain legitimacy and public confidence.
Key areas of focus for the training include improving situational awareness through engagement with traditional authorities and government institutions, as well as addressing issues such as drug abuse, sexual violence, and exploitation within operational environments. These factors are viewed as critical to maintaining the discipline and credibility of security forces.
