Nigeria civil servants report hardship from rising petrol prices

Civil servants in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are reporting significant financial strain due to rising petrol prices. According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the cost of a litre of petrol has increased from a range of N1,180–N1,350 to between N1,388 and N1,450.

Workers state that the fuel hike has directly increased daily transportation fares, forcing many to divert funds intended for food and other household necessities to cover commuting costs. Some employees noted that the rising costs have also impacted food prices and office productivity, as securing affordable transport becomes increasingly difficult.

Affected individuals highlighted that salaries have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. Some private vehicle owners have reportedly transitioned to public transportation, while others have ceased driving to work entirely to mitigate the financial impact.
