Nigeria considers Malaysian central banking model for economic growth

Following an academic study tour of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), observations have been made regarding the potential for Nigeria to adopt similar central banking frameworks. In Malaysia, sustainable economic growth is positioned as the ultimate objective, with monetary stability serving as a primary tool to achieve that goal. The Malaysian model also emphasizes enhancing the financial well-being of businesses and households as a strategic priority.

This framework raises questions for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regarding whether monetary stability should be treated as an end in itself or as an instrument for broader economic welfare and development. While stable prices are essential for investment and production, there is a debate over whether a developing economy like Nigeria should limit its central bank to monetary stability or integrate it more deeply into developmental economic policy. Some experts suggest the core issue for Nigeria may lie in the quality of coordination between monetary and fiscal authorities rather than the formal scope of the CBN's mandate.
