Nigeria expands CNG infrastructure with $2.6 billion in private investment

Nigeria has reached 106 operational Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling stations following $2.6 billion in private sector investments. Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG), announced the progress during the inauguration of a new integrated refueling unit in Karu, Abuja.

The new facility, a partnership between the State House, Pi-CNG, and Rolling Energy Ltd., involved converting an abandoned petrol station at the State House into a CNG station at no cost to the government. The unit includes a vehicle conversion center capable of converting approximately 12 vehicles daily and can serve about 150 vehicles per day.

To demonstrate the transition, the State House has integrated CNG technology into its fleet, including hybrid vehicles and shuttle buses. President Bola Tinubu has reportedly ordered the establishment of an additional 500 refueling units through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund. Currently, another 170 stations are in various stages of development or awaiting licenses.
