Nigeria convicts 653 terrorism suspects in mass trials

The Nigerian government has announced the conviction of 653 terrorism suspects during the 11th phase of special mass trials held at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed that the current phase, which took place between October 19 and 24, 2026, involved 1,060 suspects.

As of Friday midday, the court had processed 880 cases, resulting in 653 convictions, seven acquittals, and 27 discharges. Fagbemi noted that this phase represents the largest since the commencement of the special terrorism trials. Final figures are expected to be released once the proceedings conclude.

The Attorney General attributed the progress to collaboration between judicial officers, security agencies, and legal institutions. He specifically commended the work of judges led by Justice Binta Nyako, as well as the contributions of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, the police, and the Legal Aid Council.
