Omoyele Sowore Granted N200 Million Bail by Abuja Court

The Federal High Court in Abuja restored bail for Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) former presidential candidate, on a fresh N200 million bond. Justice Mohammed Umar ordered two sureties – one a recognised traditional ruler from Sowore’s community and the other a landowner in the Federal Capital Territory – and required the surrender of Sowore’s international passport to the court registrar. The bail was granted after a previous revocation on 16 June when Sowore failed to appear for his trial, which led to a bench warrant and his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre. He faces two counts of alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation for describing President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” on social‑media platforms. The court adjourned the matter to 6 July for Sowore to open his defence. Upon release, Sowore posted that imprisonment would not dampen his resolve, while supporters staged a carnival‑like protest outside the court.
