Nigeria Courts Address High-Profile Appeals and Transparency Disputes

A Federal High Court in Abuja granted a civil society group standing to challenge Abia State officials over alleged refusal to disclose local‑government funding details under the Freedom of Information Act. The court cleared the way for 19 separate suits seeking records of allocations, budgets and expenditures.

The Abuja Federal High Court also struck out former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s case against former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar’s win in the African Democratic Congress primary after the two politicians reconciled and agreed to run together in the 2027 election.

In Imo State, a three‑judge Court of Appeal dismissed the state government’s appeal that had contested a Federal High Court ruling allowing Senator Rochas Okorocha to amend procedural filings. The appeal was withdrawn following a notice of discontinuance.

Separately, the Court of Appeal heard a long‑running Lagos housing‑estate dispute (Monsuru Davies v. Prince Tajudeen Odofin). The appeal upheld some lower‑court orders, leading to contempt convictions for two appellants and confirming the dismissal of other applications.
