Abuja Federal Court sentences top Ansaru commanders to life terms

Nigeria's Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two senior leaders of the Al‑Qaeda‑affiliated Ansaru group to life imprisonment. Mahmud Usman, the self‑styled Emir of Ansaru, and his deputy Abubakar Abba pleaded guilty to all 32 terrorism‑related counts after previously entering not‑guilty pleas. Justice Emeka Nwite handed down life sentences on two counts and 20‑year terms on the remaining charges, with all sentences running concurrently from the date of their arrest. The Department of State Services (DSS) prosecuted the case, noting the defendants' alleged involvement in terrorism financing, illegal mining, kidnapping for ransom, IED fabrication, the 2022 Kuje prison break, attacks on the Wawa Cantonment and kidnappings across Nigeria, and links to extremist networks in the Sahel and Maghreb. The court’s verdict is viewed as a major blow to Ansaru’s leadership. The DSS has announced it will appeal the life sentences, arguing they are too lenient given the severity of the offences and the killings of two teachers during the Oriire abduction crisis.
