Nigeria Courts Dismiss High‑Profile Borrowing Suit and Forex Fraud Plea

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice dismissed a suit brought by the Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) that challenged Nigeria’s public borrowing practices. The court found that SERAP had not provided sufficient evidence to link the country’s debt accumulation to specific violations of socio‑economic rights, and therefore rejected the application in full.

In a separate ruling in Lagos, a Special Offences Court rejected no‑case submissions by Alhaji Usman Abubakar and the Young Alhaji Foundation. The court held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had presented prima facie evidence of a ₦950 million foreign‑exchange fraud involving Ano Farms Limited, and ordered the defendants to enter a defence.
