Nigeria courts sentence individuals for theft in Ondo and Abuja

Two separate theft cases in Nigeria have resulted in different judicial outcomes. In Ondo State, an Akure Magistrate’s Court sentenced 26-year-old Samuel Douglass to 12 months of imprisonment. Douglass pleaded guilty to stealing four baskets of tomatoes valued at N140,000, which he had been entrusted to deliver but instead sold for personal use.

Magistrate Olusola Olujobi ordered Douglass to refund the N140,000 to the complainant, noting that failure to pay would result in the defendant serving the full jail term.

In a separate case in Abuja, a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Wuse Zone 6 sentenced 22-year-old Peter Joseph to one month of community service. Joseph was convicted for the unauthorized sale of iron rods belonging to his employer, valued at N4.6 million. The court opted for a non-custodial sentence, directing Joseph to sweep the court premises, after noting the complainant's repeated absence from the proceedings.
