Nigeria Customs Service seizes 38,700 litres of petrol in Adamawa

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through its Operation Whirlwind program, has seized 38,700 litres of premium motor spirit (PMS) and a transport vehicle in Adamawa State. The seizure occurred during a six-week crackdown on petroleum smuggling across various border communities, including Malabu-Belel, Girei-Wuro Bokki, Gurin-Fufore, Wuro Alhaji-Maiha, and Mubi-Sahuda.

Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs and National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Abubakar Aliyu, stated that the confiscated goods and vehicle have a total duty-paid value of approximately N63.1 million. The operation involved recovering 1,548 jerrycans, each with a 25-litre capacity.

According to the Customs Act 2023, the seized fuel will be auctioned to the public, with proceeds remitted to the federation account. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) noted that such smuggling activities contribute to artificial product scarcity and negatively impact the national economy.
