Nigeria: Debate over religious neutrality and FAAC spending

Recent interactions between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria have sparked debate regarding the separation of religion and politics. Following a meeting between the President and the bishops, Cardinal John Onaiyekan raised concerns regarding the administration's sensitivity to the economic hardships facing Nigerians.

While presidency officials maintained the meeting was closed-door and that the President addressed the country's economic challenges, the event has fueled discussions on whether religious leaders should maintain political neutrality to avoid exacerbating sectarian tensions.

Separately, economic scrutiny has turned toward the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). Since the return to democracy in 1999, FAAC has distributed an estimated N160 trillion across the three tiers of government. Despite significant revenue inflows, including those following the June 2023 fuel subsidy removal, the nation continues to face high inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
