Nigeria debates state police proposal amid electoral integrity concerns

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is facing scrutiny over a legislative push to establish state police across Nigeria. As the constitutional amendment bill advances through the National Assembly, opposition leaders and civil society groups have expressed concerns regarding electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Critics, including Labour Party leader Peter Obi, warn that decentralizing policing without strict oversight could allow state governors to use local security forces as political tools to suppress opponents or control voting centers. Socio-religious organizations have also cautioned that rapid implementation could intensify ethnic and religious tensions if security apparatuses fall under unilateral regional control.

Separately, political stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have highlighted that misinformation and communication gaps pose a threat to the administration's governance agenda. Officials have called for improved grassroots mobilization and public awareness to ensure government initiatives are not undermined by political intolerance or lack of civic participation.
