Nigeria debates transition to dual policing system

Nigeria is debating the establishment of a dual policing system to address persistent security challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal violence. The proposal involves amending the 1999 Constitution to allow for state-run police forces to supplement the existing Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Proponents argue that the current centralized command structure in Abuja is ill-equipped to manage local threats or respond rapidly to crises in remote areas. The NPF currently faces manpower shortages and logistical gaps, often resulting in a disconnect between officers and the communities they serve due to frequent rotations and lack of local cultural or linguistic integration.

Under the proposed model, a federal force would maintain national security and handle interstate crimes, while state forces would manage local law enforcement. While decentralization is seen as a way to improve intelligence gathering and trust, critics express concerns that state governors could potentially weaponize local police forces against political opponents.
