Nigeria Defence Minister warns against motorcycle palliatives

Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has declared a level of victory in the fight against terrorism, noting that attacks by extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP are no longer as frequent or brazen. He observed that criminal activity has shifted from large-scale insurgency toward more frequent kidnappings for ransom.

Musa issued a stern warning to state governors and lawmakers regarding the distribution of motorcycles as social palliatives or through constituency projects. He cautioned that these vehicles are often diverted to bandits and terrorists, who use them to navigate difficult terrain and evade security forces. He recommended that if motorcycles must be distributed, officials should opt for small-capacity models that offer less tactical advantage to criminals.

Additionally, the Minister disclosed that security agencies have identified illegal markets and motor parks being used as routes to transport weapons and ammunition into operational areas. He noted that troops are currently conducting operations within terrorist enclaves to recover abducted individuals.
