Nigeria faces fiscal pressure as debt interest exceeds revenue
Nigeria is facing significant fiscal pressure as debt interest payments reached N7.7 trillion in the first half of 2026, exceeding total federal revenue of N6.2 trillion by N1.5 trillion. According to the World Bank’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update, interest obligations accounted for 124.2 per cent of revenue during this period. While federal revenue grew by 72.2 per cent compared to the first half of 2025—driven by improved oil receipts and corporate tax collections—the cost of servicing debt rose by 37.5 per cent due to high domestic borrowing costs.
This debt burden has severely impacted development spending. Reported federal capital expenditure fell to approximately N700 billion, meaning the government spent roughly 11 times more on interest than on capital projects. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele noted that rising interest rates, implemented to combat inflation, have contributed to these soaring servicing costs.
To address economic challenges, the World Bank Group aims to mobilize up to $5.79 billion in private financing for Nigeria in fiscal year 2026, targeting sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and small businesses. Additionally, the Debt Management Office (DMO) plans to raise N5.8 trillion through bond auctions in the fourth quarter of 2026 to finance the budget deficit. To improve accountability, Minister Oyedele has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to remit all revenues promptly and submit audited accounts.
