Nigeria: Digital skills and trades emerge as vital employment paths
Nigerian youth are increasingly turning toward digital skills and entrepreneurship to navigate a challenging formal employment market. With limited white-collar opportunities in traditional sectors like banking or government, there is a growing emphasis on acquiring marketable skills that can be monetized online or through skilled trades.
Data from Upwork and Fiverr indicate a significant shift in the global freelance market, with massive growth in demand for AI-related services. Specifically, demand for AI video generation and editing grew by 329 percent year-on-year, while AI integration and data annotation also saw substantial increases. Other high-demand areas include web design, data analytics, graphic design, and digital marketing.
Beyond the digital economy, practical skilled trades such as solar installation, welding, and CNG installation are being highlighted as viable career paths that contribute to the economy and offer more stability than traditional degree-dependent roles.
