Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund launches with $300 million
The Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund has been commercially launched to address electricity access gaps in Nigeria. The $300 million initiative is co-managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Africa50, with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) providing energy-access leadership.
The fund aims to mobilize investment for distributed renewable energy solutions, such as mini-grids and standalone solar systems, to serve underserved communities and businesses. The launch was highlighted at the inaugural ASIS Global Action Forum in New York, held alongside the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Organized by the Sterling One Foundation in partnership with the NSIA, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and RALLY, the forum focused on innovative financing to accelerate Africa’s development. Yusuf Umar, Managing Director and CEO of the Renewables Investment Platform for Limitless Energy (RIPLE), noted that closing the energy gap requires financing structures that deliver viable solutions to those who need them most.
