Abdul Samad Rabiu's $85m Port Harcourt Expansion Fuels Nigeria Maritime Growth
BUA Group announced an $85 million investment to expand its BUA Ports and Terminals facility in Port Harcourt. Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu said the project will add about 600 metres of quay frontage and enable the terminal to handle more than two million tonnes of imported raw materials each year, supporting the group's growing food business and other industrial operations.
The Federal Government is also advancing the Port Modernisation Programme, securing a £746 million UK‑backed loan for upgrades to the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, with counterpart funding now being paid. The Nigerian Ports Authority is rolling out digital trade platforms such as the National Single Window and the Port Community System to improve efficiency and reduce congestion.
In the blue‑economy arena, NIMASA Director General Dr Dayo Mobereola reaffirmed that Nigerian youths are central to the Marine and Blue Economy Policy. He highlighted initiatives including the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme, the Blue Economy Accelerator, skills‑acquisition centres in six geopolitical zones and the creation of Institutes of Maritime Studies. A knowledge‑sharing session with University of Lagos doctoral and master’s students was led by Ms Gloria Anyasodo, Director of Cabotage Services.
Separately, former NIMASA chief Dr Dakuku Peterside warned that decarbonisation and green maritime practices are becoming a regulatory requirement and a competitive advantage for the global shipping industry, especially ahead of tighter IMO carbon‑intensity rules expected in 2026.
