Nigeria Ebola patient develops multi-organ failure

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that an Ebola patient in Abuja has deteriorated into multi-organ failure. The patient, a female diplomat who traveled from Uganda to Abuja on October 3, 2026, was confirmed to be infected with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus following three levels of molecular testing.

The Bundibugyo strain is the same variant currently linked to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organization (WHO) has verified the strain and noted that there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for this variant.

Health authorities have identified 44 close contacts, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers, and individuals who had contact with the patient during her travels. These contacts are currently under active surveillance and monitoring. The patient remains in isolation while receiving medical care.
