Nigeria economic reforms drive record state revenues amid calls for policy consistency
Nigeria is navigating a complex economic transition characterized by significant structural reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows. While public frustration often targets the federal administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recent fiscal shifts have resulted in record-high monthly disbursements from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to state and local governments.
Despite these increased revenues at the sub-national level, concerns persist regarding the equitable distribution of funds and the impact on citizen welfare. Simultaneously, economic leaders are emphasizing the need for policy consistency to protect recent macroeconomic gains. At the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso highlighted that maintaining economic credibility requires continuous, intentional decision-making to ensure reforms lead to long-term investment and job creation.
