Nigeria economic reforms face scrutiny amid poverty and stability debates

Nigeria's ongoing economic reforms, initiated under President Bola Tinubu in May 2023, continue to face scrutiny due to widespread hardship and poverty. While critics argue that persistent poverty levels suggest the failure of these reforms, analysts suggest a distinction must be made between inherited economic weaknesses and the impact of current policies.

Data from the World Bank indicates that a reported 79 per cent figure includes both those below the poverty line and the near-poor who are vulnerable to economic shocks. Despite this social emergency, World Bank and IMF reports highlight improved macroeconomic conditions, increased resilience, and a recovery of confidence.

Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, stated that the country has moved past the most acute phase of adjustment. He noted that reforms such as the removal of petrol subsidies and foreign exchange market changes are building a foundation for stronger revenue, investment, and financial stability, moving the economy toward a more resilient footing.
