Nigeria economic reforms must improve household living standards

At the 19th Annual Banking and Finance Conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Abuja, leaders addressed the disconnect between improving macroeconomic indicators and the daily lives of citizens.

Dr. Dele Alabi, President and Chairman of Council of the CIBN, stated that economic milestones must translate into lower living costs, higher incomes, more jobs, and reduced poverty to be considered successful. He emphasized that the next phase of reforms must focus on transmitting stability to households and small businesses, noting that MSMEs currently face high operating costs and infrastructure challenges.

Representing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso, Deputy Governor Philip Ikeazor assured attendees that macroeconomic gains would soon benefit households. He attributed recent stability to unprecedented coordination between monetary and fiscal authorities and noted that ongoing fiscal reforms, such as the National Single Window, are expected to complement the central bank's measures to deliver results to the common man.
