Nigeria education leaders call for reform on Independence Day

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, leaders and organizations are emphasizing the critical role of education in national development.

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa acknowledged that significant challenges remain in the sector. In an Independence Day message, Alausa stated that “much work remains to be done” to ensure quality and equitable education. He highlighted the need to strengthen foundational learning, improve teacher development, and expand technical and vocational skills. These efforts are being pursued through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) as part of President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Simultaneously, the Adunni Foundation has launched a renewed push for basic education through its #Edupendent Campaign. Founder Motunrayo Alaka argued that true national independence must be matched by educational empowerment, stating that “the emancipation of the mind of the Nigerian child is central to securing the promise of Nigeria’s freedom.” The foundation is also organizing the Basic Education Torchbearers Awards (BETA) in Lagos to recognize contributions to the sector.
