Nigeria Education Minister summoned by House committee over TVET probe

The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnic and Higher Technical Education set a deadline of 18 August 2026 for the Federal Ministry of Education to submit all documents related to the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme. The committee also summoned the Education Minister to appear before it on 17 September 2026 after the minister repeatedly failed to attend hearings despite multiple invitations dating back to 30 January 2025.

Committee chairman Hon Fuad Kayode Laguda warned that continued non‑compliance could trigger further legislative action, including a possible vote of no confidence. Lawmakers had initially considered such a vote, with Hon Rabiu Yusuf describing the minister’s absence as “a high level of disrespect” to Parliament, but later opted to give the minister a final opportunity to explain.

The panel emphasized its constitutional authority under Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution to investigate ministries and ensure accountability for public resources.
