Nigeria election monitoring and voter confidence concerns

The Nigerian Fact-checkers’ Coalition (NFC) has established situation rooms in Abuja and Lagos to monitor misinformation and disinformation ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Partner organizations, including Africa Check and the Digital Africa Research Lab, will provide on-the-ground monitoring in Osun State to track narratives that could incite violence or undermine public trust.

Separately, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has identified election violence, vote buying, and misinformation as primary factors eroding public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process. During an election roundtable in Abuja, NOA official Olukemi Afolayan noted that these issues contribute to voter apathy, particularly among young Nigerians. The agency emphasized that restoring trust through civic education and values reorientation is essential to encouraging participation in future elections.
