Nigeria electricity metering rate rises to 59.69%

Nigeria's electricity metering rate rose to 59.69% in April 2026, as the number of metered customers increased by 111,654 to a total of 7,435,733. Despite this growth, the overall metering gap saw only a marginal reduction because the total number of active electricity customers also grew by 70,220 during the same period.

Regional performance among distribution companies remains inconsistent. Eko Disco reported the highest metering rate at 88.78%, followed by Ikeja and Abuja. Conversely, Yola, Jos, and Kano recorded the lowest rates, all falling below 36%. Ibadan Disco led in new customer additions, bringing 31,951 people into its metered base.

In a related development for the sector's infrastructure, the Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) has withdrawn a legal challenge against the importation of 1.55 million smart meters under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme II. The association reached an amicable resolution with the Federal Government to support the sustainable development of the electricity sector and avoid the risk of the World Bank canceling the procurement due to the ongoing litigation.
