Nigeria launches 15‑member Economic Advisory Committee led by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele

In Abuja, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele inaugurated a 15‑member Ministerial Advisory Committee aimed at strengthening economic policymaking and accelerating the implementation of Nigeria’s recent fiscal reforms. The committee, chaired by Sterling Bank Managing Director Abubakar Suleiman, includes leading economists, business executives and policy experts serving on a pro‑bono basis.

Oyedele said the body will provide independent, evidence‑based advice to identify risks, improve public financial management, enhance coordination across ministries and the private sector, and ensure that reforms translate into tangible outcomes such as job creation, lower inflation, a stable naira and greater private‑sector investment. He emphasized that “Nigeria’s economic landscape is intricate, and our fiscal space is constrained,” and warned that “the true measure of reform is the number of jobs created, inflation declining, the naira stabilising and businesses investing with confidence.”

The committee will review policies such as fuel‑subsidy removal, exchange‑rate unification and comprehensive tax reforms, supporting the government’s target of 7 % annual GDP growth and building a $1 trillion economy by 2030. It will operate strictly in an advisory capacity and will not exercise executive authority.
