Nigeria's former Attorney General Abubakar Malami loses 48 properties to federal government

The Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the final forfeiture of 48 of the 57 properties linked to former Attorney‑General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had established reasonable suspicion that the assets were proceeds of unlawful activities, dismissing the former AG’s objections and vacating an interim order on nine properties. The forfeited assets, valued at roughly N212.8 billion, include Rayhaan University’s three campuses, Rayhaan Radio, a luxury duplex in Maitama, the former Harmonia Hotels building, Meethaq Hotels in Jabi and Maitama, numerous plots, commercial plazas, factories, hotels and residential units across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano and Kaduna states. The EFCC had obtained an interim forfeiture order in January 2026 and relied on Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act. The judgment marks one of the agency’s largest non‑conviction‑based asset recovery cases.
