Nigeria expands grassroots sports investment through youth tournaments

Sports development initiatives are expanding across Nigeria, focusing on youth talent discovery and grassroots investment.

In Imo State, the 1st Late Dan Anyiam U-15 Memorial Football Tournament has commenced at the Old Township Stadium in Owerri. Sponsored by Anderson Anyiam, the tournament honors the memory of the former national team player and coach. Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Onyeocha, stated the event serves as a platform to nurture young footballers and align with state policies for youth development.

In Edo State, the Edo State Sports Commission is emphasizing grassroots investment to combat age cheating. The commission recently welcomed back the state’s under-13 badminton team following their performance at the South-South Badminton championship in Delta State, where they finished as the second-best team. Commission officials highlighted that investing in young athletes is essential for the future of sports in the state.
