Nigeria expands medical education and student welfare policies

The Association of Presidents and Proprietors of Higher Institutions in Nigeria (APPHIN) has commended the Federal Government for expanding medical education and training capacity to private higher institutions. This initiative aims to support the recruitment and training of 20,000 medical students annually to address the country’s shortage of medical professionals. APPHIN has urged the Ministry of Education to ensure private institutions are fully integrated into the implementation framework and to provide clear guidelines for accessing accredited medical simulation centres.

Separately, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has noted improvements in student welfare linked to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. NANS President Akinteye Afeez highlighted the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), improved electricity supply on certain university campuses, and a reduction in prolonged industrial actions as positive developments affecting the academic experience. NANS indicated that students are closely monitoring these policies and their impacts on social and academic well-being.
