Nigeria expands port modernisation and LNG revival plans

Nigeria is advancing major maritime and energy infrastructure projects to boost its industrial capacity and reduce cargo congestion. The federal government has approved the modernisation of four additional ports: Onne and Rivers in Rivers State, Delta Port, and Calabar Port. This initiative aims to improve cargo handling, shorten vessel turnaround times, and deepen navigation channels to accommodate larger vessels, thereby reducing the heavy concentration of traffic in Lagos.

In a separate development, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) is planning an initial $10 billion investment to revive the OgunLNG project in Ogun State, a gas project that has been stalled for over three decades. This revival coincides with the Ogun State Government’s agreement with DP World to develop the $7 billion Gateway Deep Sea Port and the 10,000-hectare Blue Marine Special Economic Zone. These combined efforts are intended to strengthen the national energy supply and enhance Nigeria’s maritime economy.
