Nigeria expands power grid capacity and revives ginger production

The Nigerian Federal Government has commissioned new electricity projects in Kano and Katsina states, adding 616 megawatts of transmission capacity to the national grid. The projects, which include a new transmission substation and six transformer projects, aim to ease pressure on existing substations and improve electricity supply for industrial, commercial, and residential consumers in the North-West region.

In the agricultural sector, the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) has launched an intervention to revive ginger farming in Kaduna State following devastation from blight. The program has reached approximately 3,400 farmers across 15 clusters, providing planting materials and extension services. The BOA aims to expand these nurseries to 16 states, with a long-term goal of increasing national ginger production to three million tonnes within five years, potentially generating $3 billion in economic value.
